Record Store Day FAQ

Record Store Day, 2016

Record Store Day 2016 will take place this year on April 16. At the time of this blog post, we’re just about a month away from every record collector’s favorite day of the year. Over the past week, there has been a lot of press coverage of the worldwide event and the number of calls and messages we’ve received has increased dramatically. Most of the inquiries have been similar, so we’ve taken the time to compile a list of Frequently Asked Questions, and answered them. If there’s anything we’ve missed that you’re curious about, click the contact tab at the top of this page and get in touch with us via your preferred medium!

What is Record Store Day?

Record Store Day is an event that takes place once a year and is designed to encourage people to patron their locally owned, independent record stores. Founded in 2007, RSD seeks to promote the unique culture of independent record stores by pulling together mostly independent artists and record labels to create and release unique records (i.e. picture discs, special colored vinyl, limited releases, never before released music, etc.,). These releases are only made available to official participating indie record stores across the country. In recent years, RSD has also celebrated Black Friday in North America, though the size and scope of the event is tamed in comparison to the main event, which takes place every April.

What is being released on Record Store Day 2016?

The official release has been made public and there are around 350 different titles being released this year. That list can be found on the official RSD website, recordstoreday.com, or directly accessed by following this link

What titles from this list will you be carrying?

We will be carrying a majority of the titles being released this year. We are seeking to get our hands on as many copies of each title as possible, especially the in demand titles. However, nothing is guaranteed to arrive in stock and won’t know with any certainty what we will have until the actual day. You can follow the store on social media for teasers, sneak peeks, and updates.

Am I able to preorder, or have you hold, any particular release(s)?

All RSD items are on a first come first serve basis. There are a number of reasons for this. One major reason is that, as previously stated, we are not guaranteed to get everything we order. We will not know exactly what we will receive and have in stock for RSD until that day. Even if our orders were guaranteed, our main priority is to allow everyone a fair shot at getting one of the releases they're really chasing after, and make sure that everyone has a great Record Store Day experience. Additionally, in full transparency, shops are prohibited from taking preorders by the organization that puts on Record Store Day. Violating any of the rules they set out would make that shop ineligible to participate in future RSDs, which is bad news for everyone involved.

Will there be any sales or other promotions for RSD?

Yes, we will be offering some sort of promotion/sale in conjunction with RSD titles. These announcements will be made as our plans solidify over the next few weeks. When all of the details for the day are set in place, we will announce them, along with a flyer and other info, so stay tuned to our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and this website for those updates.

Will you be opening early that day?

We will open at our regular hours of 11am.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFO

This our first RSD as a store, so it’s difficult to know exactly what to expect as far as turnout is concerned. While we do expect there to be a line when we open, there’s no way of knowing exactly how long that line will be. In an attempt to keep everything fair for everyone, and make sure all those who waited in that line have a chance of getting something great, we will limit the amount of items a customer can purchase on their FIRST trip through the line. This will most likely be anywhere between 3-5 titles, NO DOUBLES. The exact quantity will be determined by how large the turnout is. Once you’ve made it through the line once, you can feel free to re-enter said line and grab whatever you want!

We look forward to seeing everyone for our first RSD event, but remember, when it's all said and done, every day is Record Store Day!
